Guiding pillars of worldbuilding:
- Start with what’s fun
- When starting a new world-building endeavor, begin with what makes you excited. It’s easy to bite off more than you can chew when it comes to the hobby, so starting with the piece of the hobby that brings you the most joy can become “the trunk of the world tree.” (Rick Hertel)
- Interrogate your ideas to create meaning
- keep notes on what inspires you
- Work with familiar ideas instead of discarding them
- You’re allowed to change your mind
- Create unique fantasy names (see: creating fantasy names)
- Balance consumption and creation
- You need the space and silence to come up with new ideas and connections. Pieces will come into focus when you rest in the quiet.
- Make time for your mind to wander
