- Get a sketchbook that is as large as comfortable to carry around
- Carry it around EVERYWHERE
- Your sketchbook will look bad, you’re just starting
- But you’ll get better, it’s about time invested
- Ideally, by the end of this fundamentals course, I’ll complete a full sketchbook.
Types of Sketchbooks
- There are so many types of papers
- Important things to consider
- Sketch —
- Drawing —
- Toned — darker color
- Marker paper —
- Bristol — thicker paper for longer drawings
Sketchbooks have texture, weight, cover, materials, etc.
Texture
- Can add to the drawing
- Could also be a distraction, make it harder to add detail
- Smoother or slightly textured paper is best for this course
Weight
- Thicker paper will lead to less rippling
- GSM system is more reliable than pound system for paper weights
- For wet mediums, 150+ gsm and 300+ gsm for watercolor or staining with charcoal
